Dry Ice Blasting for Mould Removal: How It Works

Mould remediation has a built-in problem: mould grows because of moisture, so the last thing you want is a cleaning method that adds more water. That’s what makes dry ice blasting so well-suited to the job. It removes mould from wood and framing without adding any moisture, and without the scrubbing, sanding, or chemicals that traditional remediation relies on.

Why mould is hard to remove the usual way

Mould doesn’t just sit on the surface — its root structure (hyphae) works into porous materials like wood framing, joists, and subfloor. Wiping or spraying the surface often leaves the roots behind, and:

  • Scrubbing and sanding create dust that spreads spores and is slow across large framing areas.
  • Chemical treatments add moisture and leave residue, and may not reach into the grain.
  • Wire brushing is labour-intensive and inconsistent.

How dry ice blasting removes mould

Dry ice blasting fires soft CO2 pellets at the mouldy surface. Three things happen at once:

  1. The pellets’ impact knocks the mould loose.
  2. The extreme cold (−78 °C) freezes and cracks the mould’s bond to the wood.
  3. The pellets sublimate into gas, so no moisture is added and no media is left behind.

The result: mould is stripped from the surface and lifted out of the grain, down to clean wood, with no water and no residue. Because it’s fast, it covers large framing areas — crawlspaces, attics, joists, wall cavities — far quicker than hand methods.

The advantages for remediation

  • No added moisture — you’re not feeding the very thing that caused the problem.
  • Reaches into the grain — lifts root structure out of porous wood, not just the surface.
  • No chemicals — nothing toxic left in the building.
  • Fast over large areas — whole framing sections cleaned quickly.
  • Non-abrasive — removes mould without gouging structural wood.

Important: remediation is more than blasting

Dry ice blasting removes the mould, but a proper remediation job also means:

  • Finding and fixing the moisture source (the leak, condensation, or drainage issue) — otherwise the mould comes back.
  • Containment and HEPA filtration during the work to control airborne spores.
  • Post-remediation verification where required.

A qualified operator manages containment, ventilation (CO2 displaces oxygen in enclosed spaces), and PPE as part of the job.

The bottom line

For mould on wood framing and structures, dry ice blasting is one of the most effective tools available — it removes mould down to clean wood without adding moisture, chemicals, or dust, and it does it fast.
