Yes — dry ice blasting is one of the safest ways to clean electrical equipment, which is exactly why plants use it on motors, panels, transformers, and control gear that water-based cleaning could destroy. The reason comes down to two properties of dry ice: it’s non-conductive and it’s completely dry.
If you’ve got dusty switchgear, a grimy motor, or a contaminated control panel and you’re nervous about cleaning it, here’s what you need to know.
Why it’s safe for electrical equipment
1. Dry ice is non-conductive. Solid CO2 does not conduct electricity. Unlike water or many chemical cleaners, the blasting media won’t create a path for current, so there’s far less risk of shorts or arc faults.
2. There’s no water. Water is the enemy of electrical equipment — it causes shorts, corrosion, and long dry-out times. Dry ice blasting adds zero moisture. The pellets turn to gas on impact, so equipment is dry the moment cleaning stops.
3. There’s no residue or grit. Sandblasting leaves abrasive grit that can lodge in windings and contacts. Dry ice leaves nothing behind but the contaminant that’s fallen away — no media to work its way into tight tolerances.
4. It’s non-abrasive. The pellets are soft. They lift dust, oil, and carbon without eroding insulation, labels, or delicate components.
What can be cleaned
- Electric motors and generators
- Switchgear, panels, and busbars
- Transformers and substations
- Control cabinets and PLCs
- Bus ducts and cable trays
- Manufacturing equipment with sensitive electronics nearby
Much of this can be cleaned in place, and in many cases while adjacent systems keep running — cutting the downtime that a full teardown and dry-out would require.
The safety practices that matter
“Safe for the equipment” and “safe for the crew” are two different things, and a professional manages both:
- Ventilation. CO2 gas displaces oxygen, so enclosed or low-lying spaces need proper airflow and, where appropriate, CO2 monitoring.
- De-energizing where required. Whether equipment stays live depends on the job, the voltage, and your site’s safety procedures. A qualified operator works to your lockout/tagout rules.
- PPE. The pellets and stream are extremely cold, so operators wear appropriate protection.
This is the main reason to hire a trained, insured operator rather than renting a machine and doing it yourself — the cleaning is straightforward, but the electrical and confined-space safety judgment is not.

Dry ice blasting is non-conductive, dry, residue-free, and non-abrasive — a combination that makes it uniquely well-suited to electrical equipment. It cleans what water and grit can’t safely touch, usually in place and with minimal downtime.
