Dry Ice Blasting vs Chemical Cleaning: Which Is Right for Your Equipment?

Chemical cleaning and dry ice blasting both remove stubborn buildup — grease, adhesive, carbon, coatings — but they solve the problem in opposite ways. Chemical cleaning dissolves contaminants with solvents or degreasers. Dry ice blasting physically lifts them off with frozen CO2 pellets and no chemicals at all. For most industrial and food-related work, that difference matters a lot.

The core difference

  • Chemical cleaning applies solvents, degreasers, or acids that break down the contaminant so it can be wiped or rinsed away. Effective, but it introduces chemicals, dwell time, rinsing, and disposal.
  • Dry ice blasting uses a stream of soft CO2 pellets that freeze, crack, and blast contaminants off. The pellets sublimate into gas, leaving only the contaminant to clean up — no chemical residue.

When chemical cleaning makes sense

Chemical cleaning still has its place:

  • Deeply penetrated contamination where a solvent needs to soak in
  • Very large flat surfaces where wipe-down is fast and cheap
  • Situations where you already have the chemicals, containment, and disposal set up

When dry ice blasting is the better choice

Dry ice blasting tends to win when chemicals are a liability:

  • Food & beverage — no chemical residue near food-contact surfaces, and no rinse step to validate.
  • Electrical equipment — no liquids, no residue, cleaned in place.
  • Sensitive substrates — no corrosion or discolouration from harsh solvents.
  • Regulated sites — no spent-chemical waste stream to contain and dispose of.
  • Worker safety priorities — no fumes, no skin-contact hazard, no WHMIS chemical handling.

The hidden cost of chemicals

The sticker price of a drum of degreaser is only part of the story. Chemical cleaning also carries the cost of PPE, ventilation, dwell and rinse labour, and — often the biggest one — disposal of the spent chemical and rinse water under environmental regulations. Dry ice blasting sidesteps that entire chain: the CO2 becomes gas and only the contaminant remains.

So which should you choose?

Ask: do you actually need a chemical reaction, or do you just need the buildup gone? If it’s the latter — and especially if the surface is food-related, electrical, sensitive, or on a regulated site — dry ice blasting usually does the job faster, safer, and with less cleanup.
